The Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham was established in 1061 by Richeldis de Faverches, English noblewoman, in response to a heavenly command to build a replica of the Holy House of Nazareth. Destroyed in 1538 by order of Henry VIII, public pilgrimages could only resume after the Catholic Emancipation (1829). In 1897 Pope Leo XIII reestablished the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham.
